Engage 2045: Community Chats & Questionnaires

Deciding & Affirming

Help us make critical decisions for our community in this third and final round of public engagement activities for the Engage 2045 Comprehensive Plan update! Three questionnaires are your critical opportunity to provide opinions on actions the County should take in the future to implement planning priorities.

Policies & Actions Questionnaire
Through the Policies and Actions Questionnaire, the County is seeking your input regarding policies and actions that, if implemented, will shape the future of James City County for years to come. The topics of the questionnaire focus on planning priorities identified by citizens in the 2019 Citizen Survey and prior rounds of Engage 2045 public engagement. These topics are:

  1. Affordable Housing
  2. Nature
  3. Economic Development
  4. Quality of Life
  5. Setting Priorities
  6. About You
Below is a sample question.

Character Design Guidelines Questionnaire
The Character Design Guidelines Questionnaire uses a MetroQuest survey platform that will walk you through a series of question panels and will give you instructions for each panel. The questionnaire contains 3 panels of questions that ask you to view images of developed and open space areas and rank your preferences. There are also helpful "What to do?" links on the panels in case you need a reminder. There are buttons on the map to zoom in for a closer look. On any of the panels, you can zoom in more by hitting [Control +} on your computer or by using two fingers to zoom in on your mobile device.  You will also see a link to a helpful Resource Document (PDF) in the “More about this” window that will give you some more technical information about some of the images you will see. Check out the sample panel below.

Future Land Use Map Questionnaire
The Future Land Use Map Questionnaire asks for your opinions on future land use map changes that are being considered as part of this planning update. This questionnaire builds on input provided in previous rounds of public engagement in this process.

Land Use designations are used to determine what kind of growth will occur in the County and where. They are policy designations that help guide changes to, and implementation of, development regulations. They also help the County make long-term decisions about infrastructure, road improvements, and public facility locations. Land Use designations are also used when the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors consider certain kinds of development proposals, such as rezoning and special use permits. Below is an example of one of the proposed land use designation changes.
