Autism awareness stickers and magnets are available to County residents who live with or care for an individual with Autism. The purpose of these is to alert public safety personnel that they may need to communicate differently with someone in the residence or vehicle during an emergency situation. Bike Helmet Safety is important for riders of all ages. James City County code requires that every person 14 years of age or younger wear a protective helmet when riding a bike. In order to help prevent serious head injuries, riders must wear a properly fitted helmet. Police officers are available to demonstrate the proper use and fit of bike helmets to anyone interested.
Bike Rodeos are designed to help children improve their riding skills while promoting bike safety. Children are taught the proper way to wear a helmet, proper hand signals and how to steer and maneuver while riding a bike. Children will also navigate through road courses where traffic lights, stop signs and pedestrian crossings are simulated. Bike Rodeos are a fun and interactive way for children to learn the important rules of the road.
The Police Department offers a free bike registration for citizens of James City County. The program is designed to help deter theft of bicycles and to assist police in returning recovered bicycles. To register for this program, you must complete a registration form and make an appointment with a Community Services Unit officer who will verify the information provided. Child ID cards are free identification cards for children. One of the most helpful tools for local law enforcement when searching for a lost child is a recent photograph. Child IDs contain both a photo and fingerprint of the child along with physical descriptors that could be helpful if they ever became lost. Child ID events are held at various locations throughout the County or by appointment.
The FBI and The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) also offer Child ID apps for both Android and Apple based smartphones. Download the apps here:
The Heads Up Program enables James City County residents to provide information about their pre-existing conditions to the Emergency Communications Center (ECC). This information prepares responders for special conditions prior to their arrival in an emergency.

Project Lifesaver's mission is to use technology in assisting those who care for victims of Alzheimer's and Related Mental Disorders (ARMD), including autism, and others who are at high risk of wandering. Project Lifesaver places personalized radio transmitters on identified persons with ARMD. These transmitters assist local emergency agencies in locating those who cannot help themselves.
