What Will You Do This Weekend?

  • Attend Military Through the Ages at Jamestown Settlement on Saturday, March 17 and Sunday, March 18. Hundreds of re-enactors present centuries of military history in one weekend. Re-enactors demonstrate a variety of weapons and military tactics, field communication and medical treatment. This annual event, held each year since 1984, features comparative artillery firings, a Saturday children's parade and a Sunday military pass-in-review. Admission is required, but local residents receive complimentary admission.
  • Create an adorable mosaic froggie birdbath for your garden during a class at Artfully Yours Studio on Saturday, March 17 from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. All supplies are included and participants will learn basic mosaic techniques and basic grouting. Cost is $50 and tickets must be purchased in advance.
  • Take a break from the cold and spend your day in the Jamestown Rediscovery artifact museum on Saturday, March 17 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. during Archaearium Artifact Adventures. Meet colonists, participate in archaeological activities and explore the world of the first permanent English colony in the New World. Activities include touching and feeling artifacts, sorting and washing artifacts, mending pottery, coloring a ceramic, Ecology: the Environment at Jamestown and Conversation with a Colonist: Meet Anas Todkill. These activities are free with paid admission to Historic Jamestowne.
  • Take a walk and discover life in four different aquatic ecosystems during the Stream to Sea Stroll at York River State Park on Saturday, March 17 from 10 a.m. until noon. The hike covers a variety of terrain including a small woodland and marsh stream, freshwater pond and brackish/saltwater river. With nets, participants will capture and identify different crustaceans, fish and take note of plant life.
  • Don't miss the PAW-TY at Fido Fest at Jamestown Beach Event Park on Saturday, March 17 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Fido Fest is a family festival featuring dog-friendly activities and games including a Fido Fashion Show with prizes for best overall, best couple, funniest and most creative. Also, Best Trick contest and Photo contest! All dogs attending Fido Fest must be on a leash no more than 8' long. Admission is $5 per car, cash or check only. This event is co-sponsored with Heritage Humane Society.
  • Busch Gardens Williamsburg is hosting a Members & Pass Holders Sneak Peek Day on Saturday, March 17 from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. This year, Spring Sneak Peek Day includes:
    • The Voltage Brothers performing in the Ireland Village at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
    • Harley Boone performing in Das Festhaus at noon and 2 p.m.
    • Irish cuisine and drinks (purchase required)
    • Your fav roller coasters & rides
    • Membership info sessions and more
  • Catch March Madness during Hoops and Hops at Billsburg Brewery all weekend long! All the action will be on the three 70” televisions in the taproom and there will be a food truck each day and music in the event tent for St. Patrick’s Day.
  • Join the Virginia Peninsula Astronomy Stargazers for a night of wonder and discovery on Saturday, March 17 from 7-11:45 p.m. at York River State Park. Away from the city lights, the broad cliffs above the York River are perfect for observing constellations, planets and other features in the night sky. There is no fee for this program.
  • Need a good laugh? Head to the Comedy Club of Williamsburg for a performance by Beatty Barnes on Saturday, March 17 at 8 p.m. Barnes has a highly visual performance and his characterization of everyday events turns the ordinary into the extraordinary.
  • The Williamsburg Winery Cycling Club returns on Sunday, March 18. Enjoy a Sunday morning group ride through the Historic Triangle and back to the Winery for wine and brunch specials at the Gabriel Archer Tavern. Ride registration begins each Sunday at 8:30 a.m. and the ride begins at 9 a.m. There is no fee to participate. All Cycling Club participants will receive a 15% discount at the Gabriel Archer Tavern following the completion of the ride. The discount is only valid the day of the ride. The Williamsburg Winery Cycling Club offers three different group cycling options:
    • Option 1: 40 miles with an average pace of 18-19 mph (Jolly Pond Loop)
    • Option 2: 40 miles with an average pace of 16-17 mph (Freedom Park Loop)
    • Option 3: 25 miles with an average page of 14-15 mph
  • Do you like to color Easter eggs but hate the preparation and mess? Come to the James City County Library to color your eggs on Sunday, March 18 from 1-3 p.m. Children of all ages are invited to come and paint, dye and decorate. We will supply the eggs and all the decorations you need for creative family fun – and then we’ll do the clean-up! This is a drop-in program appropriate for all ages; however, children younger than 3 will need adult assistance. Limit 3 eggs per child.
  • Have you ever explored the historical markers throughout James City County? You can view a full list on the Virginia Department of Historic Resources website. Explore the history of James City County! The newest marker at Doncastle’s Ordinary was recently unveiled.

St. Patrick’s Day Events

  • Enjoy weekend festivities for St. Patrick’s Day at Billsburg Brewery!
    • Thursday, March 15: Tony Bob Merritt will play live from 6-9 p.m.
    • Friday, March 16: Uncle Jack will play live from 6-9 p.m. and Black Pearl will be on site.
    • Saturday, March 17: Hangar 09 will play live from 6-10 p.m. and Two Drummers Offbeat Eats will be on site.
    • Sunday, March 18: Poisoned Dwarf will play from noon until 3 p.m. with Black Pearl offering brunch options.
  • Take the kids to We Rock Shamrock Kids Paint Party at We Rock the Spectrum on Saturday, March 17 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Children will create a 12x12 work of art. All supplies are included with instruction and admission to play at the gym afterwards. Parents welcome to drop off or stay and paint with child. Light refreshments provided.
  • Join Carrot Tree Kitchens for a traditional St. Patrick's Day Dinner at their Jamestown Road location on Saturday, March 17 from 5-8 p.m. The menu includes favorites like Irish soda bread, potato leek soup, corned beef with cabbage, Shepherd's pie, salmon en croute, vegetarian cabbage rolls and lamb stew. Reservations recommended by calling 757-229-0957.
  • Enjoy the annual Oceans & Ale St. Patrick’s Day Party on Saturday, March 17. There will be Irish food and drink specials all day including Irish nachos, a reuben and house-made corned beef and cabbage.  Sammy Lee & The Way back will perform at 9 p.m. Stone Brewing will be on tap including two Imperial IPAs, two American IPAs and a Pale Ale. After 9 p.m., this event is 21+ only.
  • Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at The Corner Pocket on Saturday, March 17. There will be a special Irish menu all day featuring food and beverage. Lunch hours are 11:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Evening hours begin at 4:30 p.m. and includes a live performance by Poisoned Dwarf, the best traditional Irish band around! There is a $5 cover charge.

Community Events

  • Attend Cottage Gardens at Freedom Park on Saturday, March 17 from 10-11 a.m. Local landscape architect and former garden director at Colonial Williamsburg, Gordon Chappell, will talk about the history and design of cottage gardens and the plants found within. A $5 donation to help the Williamsburg Botanical Garden grow is appreciated. For more information, contact Chappell at
  • Attend STEAM Saturdays: The Magical Math Tour on Saturday, March 17 at 1 p.m. or 3 p.m. at the James City County Library. Kids of all ages will be energized with laughter, cheers and applause while they review important mathematical concepts with The Magical Math Tour starring mathmagician Brian Curry. Children will play a special version of "Deal or No Deal" while they uncover the meaning of probability. They will review fractions as a newspaper is torn in half, quarters, eighths and is then magically restored. Each amazing piece of magic they see not only demonstrates a concrete math concept, but helps kids relate math to their everyday lives long after the curtain closes. The March STEAM Saturday is all about the magic of math, so come early and stay after the program for STEAM-related interactive activities and art projects. The Magical Math Tour will repeat at 3 p.m.
  • Attend CDR’s 40th Annual Bid ‘n Buy Auction at Jamestown High School on Sunday, March 18 from 11:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Silent and live auction with all proceeds benefiting Child Development Resources. There will be more than 500 auction items including food, music, children's activities and the raffle of a 2018 Jeep Compass! Plus a $500 door prize will be awarded during the live auction!
