May is Bicycle Month so celebrate with two events centered on cycling.

The 20th annual Pedal the Parkway is on May 6 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Enjoy cycling along the shores of the scenic James River from Jamestown to Williamsburg, or vice versa. This event is free and is held rain or shine. All participants must register and all cyclists must wear helmets. Eight miles of empty, car-free pavement on the Colonial Parkway will allow you to start at your own time, proceed at your own pace and enjoy refreshments at the midway point. Limited parking is available at Jamestown Settlement.

The annual Cap2Cap Bike Ride, coordinated by the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation, is on May 13. This is not a race, but a supported ride with rest stops, lunch and fun including a post-ride party. There are numerous routes that are all different lengths. Eight miles of the Capital Trail is in James City County.

Jamestown Day

May 13 is Jamestown Day. Jamestown Day celebrates the 410th anniversary of the settlers landing in Jamestown. Both Historic Jamestowne and Jamestown Settlement participate in Jamestown Day. A variety of family-friendly programs on Powhatan and English weaponry, military and maritime demonstrations, and traditional music and entertainment will take place at both sites. Admission is required to both Historic Jamestowne and Jamestown Settlement, but a value ticket may be purchased that also includes two Yorktown sites.

The Kingsmill Championship

The Kingsmill Championship will once again host some of the top players of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) on the renowned River Course at Kingsmill Resort on May 15-21, 2017. Tickets are on sale now and all children/teens under 17 receive complimentary admission with an adult ticket. As part of the tournament, there will once again be an LPGA Junior Clinic presented by James City County for children on May 20. Pre-registration is required to participate, but there is no cost to participate.

High Fiber Festival

May 20 is the the High Fiber Festival in Toano. Weavers, spinners, quilters, artisans, fiber animals, children’s entertainment, food vendors, and other textile related people will converge on the campus of historic Hickory Neck Church to celebrate and share the appreciation of the many fiber animals and plants and their farmers and fiber artisans of the community and surrounding region. Products will all be 75% natural, which is where the festival name comes from. This event is not for knitters and quilters only. Lamb, alpaca, bunny and other animal personalities, children’s fiber related activities, good food and good entertainment will appeal to all who desire to stroll on the beautiful historic Hickory Neck campus.
