Pocahontas Trail Corridor Study
This study is examining the Pocahontas Trail corridor between Fire Station 2 and James River Elementary School and engaging the community to identify key transportation needs and define a vision for the future of the corridor. The study will identify feasible transportation improvements for all users, including motorists, transit users, pedestrians, and bicyclists. The recommended improvements will match the surrounding character of the Pocahontas Trail corridor and address the community’s needs while enhancing quality of life for area residents and users of the corridor. The Study Team will develop concept sketches and cost estimates and recommend strategies to prioritize improvements along the corridor after collecting public input.

Anticipated Completion: May 2018
The Steering Committee is comprised of representatives from the neighborhoods, churches and businesses along the corridor who have volunteered to advise the County and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) during this study. The group will meet monthly over the next 6 to 8 months. The committee’s next meeting will be Jan. 18 at the Abram Frink Jr. Community Center from 4-6 p.m.

Also assisting the County and VDOT during this process is a Technical Committee comprised of staff from various agencies and departments. The Technical Committee is comprised of representatives from the Police and Fire Departments, Parks & Recreation, Williamsburg-James City County Schools, Social Services, VDOT, Stormwater & Resource Protection, James City Service Authority (JCSA), Planning and Williamsburg Area Transit Authority (WATA).
Additional outreach has been conducted with other local groups in the community to gain additional feedback from the community. Members of the project team conducted a presentation at James River Elementary School on Dec. 12, 2017 and at Colonial Manor on Dec. 19, 2017.
The Steering Committee and Technical Committee meet approximately once a month. In addition, 3 public workshops and a number of small group meetings will be held throughout the study to gather citizen input. The first public workshop took place on Nov. 16. The second public workshop was held on Jan. 24.
